Piracy has existed through all times, and allways will. Until the demise of the earth we live on. In the midevil age pirates ruled over the dark seas, they fought fiercly for their freedom their whole life, stealing from mercenaries and rich merchants. Their world was an unavoidable war and an endless struggle. The mercenaries formed networks and fought back, they hunted down the pirates and only the stongest ones survived. This age eventually came to an end and the shape of pirates shifted, but their will lived on. With the coming of the cyberage and cyberspace came the cyberpirates and our happy days. They now surf on tidal waves on the net far away.
With the invention of the internet came the intention of sharing and spreading information. Thus piracy arrived on the internet! it was a great way to share and spread valuable resources and information. At first the internet was small, and a respected utility that noone even thought of abusing. But times changed! Internet is now insanly huge and is used from everything between pluto and the production of the sandwich lables i sometimes buy from the store along with the sandwiches. In the world of internet piracy bittorrent is the most important invention since electricity. It introduces a brand new way to download files, where the more users download, the better! The biggest sites with illegal direct downloads are going down one by one. |
Most sites like this also rely on adds and addware/spyware to get them their cash. P2P is an alternative many people choose, but it is unreliable and there are many viruses

In the dark month of December 2004 a series of bittorrent trackers were forced to close, among them Suprnova, the worlds biggest torrent tracker at the time, with a directory of thousands of torrents recieving millions of visitors every day. It was a central part in the bittorrent network and it will allways remain a legend. Suprnova is now a P2P news site and a bunch of smaller sites have popped up to replace suprnova. Sloncek ( the owner of SuprNova ) took Suprnova of the web voluntarily, many other site owners were arrested while trying to fight back. A new site has popped up to replace Suprnova, it’s called Newnova, and has the exact same layout and site structure as suprnova had before. Many people claim that Sloncek started the site again with a new name, but he denies it and there is no evidence. A great big grand applause to whomever did though! Lets hope it was him! |

Filesharing is a great way to spread and share information and resources. It is also a great part of culture, and even though the music industry denies it, it is of valuable use to them too. The largest companies may not benefit, but they don’t need to either, they’re big enough, it’s the small ones that gain popularity and are noticed in this big big world. Also, the people who download the most are also the people who buy the most. Arresting all filesharers would be a great way to put an abbrupt stop to the world economical flow. Many music artists/bands have noticed the positive effects of putting their music up on the internet for free download. Who would buy an album at a shop they had never even heard about? |

Unless it had a cheap price … and that wouldn’t give them such a big income. Letting people listen to the music makes lots of people buy the music aswell, of course a real copy is better than a fake. It’s reality. Right now the biggest torrent tracker in the world is the pirate bay. It was originaly founded by Pirat Byrån, a Swedish organization against anti-piracy and the freedom that is taken from us. In the last few years the situation has been getting out of hand. Big companies, expecially record lables, are doing anything they can do stop the piracy, and still it goes on. Sony was starting to get so desperate that they even used a hidden virus in the compact disks they sold to find all pirates and erase the music on their hardrives. If they are so keen with following the law, going against it themselves to prevent others from doing it is absurd! Their action resulted in sonys sales drasticly going down, which proves the power pirates have and that they do buy the music they like and not only download it.
All the time new laws are being made to prevent piracy. Organizations are even trying to prevent lyrics on the web since the claim that it is copyrighted material. Even though that is true, the lyrics being availible on the internet has no negative effect on their sales, in fact it has a positive effect on their sales, and if they manage to prevent lyrics on the internet I'm afraid the interest in buying music will decrease very much!
There are various companies that try to stop piracy, and many who try to keep it. It is a constant war between both sides, and since the anti-piracy side is on the same side as the government and the current law book in most countries they have certain privillages. The numbers of pirates are many though, and it will be impossible to arrest all of them, half of the world wouldn’t fit in the prisons and noone has the budget to build and mantain the additional prisons needed. I believe in the freedom of speech, the freedom of sharing and the meaning of life. These are my opinions and hopefully many others share them as well!
