VPS Scam & SeedBoxes

Just before summer I bought a simple VPS, a Virtual Private Server, web-hosting one step up from normal shared hosting and still a step away from dedicated hosting. VPS is still shared hosting, but in a virtually dedicated environment, IOW you can manage the alloted space just as you would manage a dedicated server, install things like PHP or SQL and configure everything. I bought a cheap account at 'The VPS Gods' and tried setting up something accessible. The server OS was some Linux which I don't know shit about but I managed to set up a working FTP account and PHP & SQL and a bunch of different interfaces that still didn't really do everything I wanted them to, but at least it worked! Woohoo!

I left for summer, and when I returned 'The VPS Gods' just disappeared. No refund. No notice. Nothing.

It wasn't an expensive VPS and I was actually thinking about just shutting down the account since, well, shared hosting is much easier, but still, this sucks. Googled the site and it seems no one's getting a refund, the site was a scam, just an overnight (more like overmonth) host that snatched everyones money and ran away with it. Not be seem too evil, but knowing that not only my money got snatched away is really a big relief. :D

So anyhow, I bought a seedbox today, another kind of VPS specialized for torrents. It has a built in web-interface (rTorrent I think) so I don't need to mess around with the shell this time, and I'm only paying for a month this time, hehe. My upload speed is by my ISP capped at around 80kbps, and the one I signed up for has a 1gbps line, so that's really a big difference... really! I won't be using the seedbox for downloading, as the name implies it'll be used to seed, to help others download stuff. ;) Maybe I can get a few torrents of my own up and active too, a collection of all my loops maybe? Albums? Templates? Poetry in e-book format? Gotta love torrents!

Seems like the 1gbps line is shared, but wth, the speeds are still x10 what I'd get otherwise uploading, and you obviously get what you pay for. Dedicated lines with that capacity are expensive as hell anyway. I'll let you know how it worked when the test month is over. :)

Unfortunately this is happening an awful lot, the best thing to do is a simple whois search before placing an order, make sure the domain has been running for at least 1 year.

Good advice! Problem is that new hosts tend to offer much better plans, and if the host does stick around the price is good for life, you can generally get a much better offer than with hosts that have been around for a while, adapated to the market.
