Can't Edit Documents In Use

Just now I tried editing the properties of a Word document I had open, and it surprised me that none of the fields could be edited. In fact, you couldn't even click on them, change content and then try to save them receiving an error message. Has it always been like this? Maybe I've never tried editing an open document earlier. For a while I thought that something had changed, that Microsoft had suddenly locked document properties in place with their last update (a 157-part update... I was amazed) but it turns out that was not the case. I closed the document, low and behold, I could edit again. That's all.

What Game Is This?

I started playing this game some time, and I didn't get very far. Why?

Some things were good, such as the graphics and the available weapons, but other things weren't quite so well. Things such as getting sniped from a distance on the very first level, and having to resort to stealth to get anywhere in the game without being killed. I prefer being able to rampage right into the enemy den. The graphics were amazing though. Screenshots don't really do the game justice.

So anyway, what's this game called again? I have no memory...

Physics Crafts Quickrun

I never fell for the MineCraft hype. Now they're even making Legos for it. It's grown way bigger than I expected it to become when I first checked out the site back in... some year long ago... but who needs that when you can pile blocks of grass in a clear blueskied environment like below?

Shady Blocks

Grassy Cubes

Shadowy Squares

Field Of Boxes

Maybe Mine Craft wasn't so hard to make. :P

Chess Titans

The built-in Windows 7 Chess game. Is it any good? Yes it is. It's great. It's the first included Windows game with an enemy AI programmed it, which makes it kind of special. I prefer a real match any day though, the AI is way too smart for me. :) Of course the settings can be adjusted, but who wants to play an easy game? Hrhmm...

Chess! Titans!!

Chess! Titans!!

Chess! Titans!!

Haven't played it yet? :O

The A Day Today

A while back I submitted a couple of images to this event. People from 165 countries submitted over a hundred thousand other images the same day. Update.

This Monday (8th October) 45 of your images will be simultaneously displayed throughout the day on 85,000 digital screens across the world.

From Sydney to London, Dublin to Moscow, Shanghai to Cape Town, this will be the world’s largest photographic exhibition, with a potential audience of 46 million people.

Not that any one of the two photos I submitted are included though. If I was on the jury It'd been different, but apparently the judges like pictures of people and I like pictures without people. Lot of interesting photos among the chosen ones though. Take a look.

Firefox Addons 2012

So, what do I have installed this year? Here's last year's post. Since then the list has once again shrunk plenty in size! I haven't found any good replacement for Abduction! (a plugin that let you capture the entire window content as a PNG), a plugin that is unfortunately not supported in new FF versions. Otherwise the plugins that have been removed were mostly useless. ANT Video Downloader was useful, but it turns out they save information about you when you use the plugin and use it for questionable purposes!! So, no more ANT. Anyway, here's the list:

  • ColorZilla
  • An eyedropper tool that lets you click on any pixel within the browser to get the HEX value for that element. Useful when designing sites.

  • DownThemAll!
  • I wanted to download a directory of images one day, but realized that there's got to be some easier way than just clicking each link separately, and there was! I played around with plenty of plugins before settling for this one, it's easy to use and works just like I need it to: by downloading all files of a certain type that are linked to on a specified page (or in a directory). Useful. :)

  • United States English Spellchecker
  • No comments. :P

  • WOT
  • WOT stands for Web Of Trust. It's a plugin that allows you to rate and review sites you visit, and see what reviews and ratings sites you visit have. An icon that ranges from green to red is shown just before the address bar, so you know (based on ratings and reviews) if a site is reliable or not. There's mostly only information on large websites though, since it's a community-based plugin, but it's a nice idea! I became a bit obsessed with it when I installed it and started reviewing and rating all sites I could recall (and my own, of course :), but now I don't use it so much.

  • X-Notifier!
  • Mail Notifier switched names. It's really the same plugin though, with a few feature additions and a new icon. What it does is shows an email icon with the number of unread messages in a set number of accounts in the browser taskbar.

Oh yeah, I did get rid of the Greasemonkey framework. All to make the browser faster. If I need it in the future I'll install it again, but for now, I don't. I've started disabling a ton of plugins too, to speed up the browser. Apart from Colorzilla and WOT the list above is pretty much essential features, ones that most people need. Still looking for a good image capturing plugin. Also, a timer! Can't find one that suits my needs! Maybe next year.
