Zero Tolerance (2015)

Zero Tolerance (2015)

I watched this one for Scott Adkins, but he wasn't the main character, he was a part-time villain with a dubious persona and a British accent (well done on the accent). The main character chases him, finds him, and kills him. Not really what I was hoping for.

The main character is played by Dustin Nguyen, and though he does look pretty tough, it looked like Scott was holding back in their fight, and had plenty of opportunities to attack that he didn't take. There aren't that many actual fights in the movie, though plenty of gunfire, so it feels like they could've done more with the big one. I'm a bit disappointed in that. Disapointed either Adkins or Nguyen, or both, didn't get a chance to really showcase their skills in the one showdown. If Nguyen is a good fighter, the filming and fighting choreography could've been so much better.

The plot's simple enough: the main character is a ghost (which means spy, sort of), his daughter Angel has been killed, and together with his cop and partner they go looking for the killer(s). It all starts with Scott Adkins killing a few people for disrespecting Angel though, so at first I'm thinking he's the good guy... but apparently not.

It's that kind of movie where the wrong guys die, and guys die for no reason, and in the end you realize that it was all just one big misunderstanding. Just like that one guy said. It's a bit depressing and/or pointless, though it feels like there is amoral there somewhere if you want to find it. Overall though, it's not a bad movie.

The unusual plot development saves the movie from being just another run-off-the-mill action thriller. The scenes look good (especially the intro), and there's nothing wrong with the actors either, but the script doesn't feel very consistent, and the action not as authentic as it could be. It's a good B-movie with potential to be a great. Not bad.

Extraction Day (2014)

Extraction Day (2014)

I heard bad things about this movie, but as far as B-movies go it was better than expected. The special effects weren't always the most amazing, and the guns didn't always seem very heavy to fire, but I've seen so much worse, and they did other things right. They kept the pace, they acted well, and though the plot was a bit messy in part, it followed through from start to finish, revealing more and more along the way. There was both action and intrigue, and even a short car chase they aced. The blood looked realistic, the fights were fluent, and the chain of events made sense. I liked the intro and ending too, dubstep music combined with flashes of creative film.

It wasn't all perfect, but even mainstream movies rarely are, so considering supposed limitations and budget, I'm pretty impressed.

The story's basic: there's a virus on the loose, a virus with the potential to kill everyone on the planet, and only one man has the cure. Unfortunately for him, his girlfriend gives him a drug that erases his memory, right before the building they are in is stormed and they both escape, killing a few perps in the process. He battles his lack of memory, and doesn't trust her at first, but she's all he's got, so they stick together until... events unfold.

The title makes little sense until the end, but even then it's cryptic. I feel like they could've chosen a better one. It was a good movie though. Not one I'd watch again, but it kept me from skimming, had good suspense, and a script with a few surprises.

Jeremy Ninaber makes a movie debut here as main character too, and though he looks almost excessively angry in some scenes, he plays the lead well, as do the crew. Not bad.

Self-Explanatory Early Morning Haiku

It's early morning,
Because the night is passed now,
And the day is here.

Week 18 - What Is Busy!

Another week passed by fast! I've posted a ton of stuff on the blog and then some more, 6 reviews, and here's last week.

I've kept going with my stream of site improvements, and wish I could say I've finally gone through all comments, but going through the older ones I discovered some messed up posting orders on old posts that I still need to fix. Also some missing comments, I think (some responses don't make sense), but since the old engine is since long dead and gone there's not much I can do about those. Which is a bit annoying.

Also wish I had ported over all the comments on the 'Let's Count To A Million' post from back in the day... it probably seemed like a gargantuan task back then, but it was just the one post, and it would've added a bunch to the comment count. Oh well, I've at least gone through all comments since the site was moved from CuteNews to WordPress, and fixed a few bugs/other things while I was at it.

Stuff like:

  • Anime posts are back on the frontpage again.
  • Comment numbering is fixed, again.
  • I've started moving old posts from 'blog' to relevant subcategories, though there's still plenty to move (looks like the stats page only counts posts in the main 'blog' category - where there aren't supposed to be any posts, they're all supposed to be sorted within the subcategories. I'll fix that later).
  • Sorted and fixed a bunch of old tags, shortcodes, classes etc.
  • Other stuff? I don't recall it all.

On a random note, Fuck This Jam hasn't changed in 2 years! It still looks the same as when I posted about it back in 2014. And speaking of 2014, that was definitely the best year for comments on this blog. Most of the 'most commented posts' seem to be from that year. And btw, what's up with female actresses calling themselves actors? Isn't actress the feminine alternation for actor?

In more lifely news, I've been hard at work trying to get a tan before summer kicks in for real, walking a bit more than usual, and even jogging a couple of days. The first run was hellish, but the second time I felt like I was in better shape already! Also took a tour of the city this Friday, after work, before meeting up with a buddy come back from vacation.

I walked by the water for almost two hours straight to fill a gap of time, after my plans at waiting Kung Fu Panda 3 at the movies were foiled because, apparently, you have to buy or book a movie ticket 45 minutes before the movie starts!! Whats up with that?! I then tried getting an ice cream at Burger King, but their ice cream machine was broken, and I didn't eat anything later on either because out of the blue a sea gull pissed on my hand. What the hell, gull?! And there was no place to wash hand. It was a good walk though. Sunshine and stuff.

Well, that was Friday, and otherwise I've been working - at work and with site work, and the week just passed by in a Flash. Pico Day was this Saturday, and though I did have something planned I didn't really have the energy to post it on that particular day. Time flies, like a shitty seagull. Until next week.

The Greatest Will & Betterment

I've counted my mistakes,
I've keeled over and failed,
I thought about my future,
I think that I'll prevail.

The wind is blowing up now,
Soon I'll be setting sail,
I'll become the tutor,
I'll teach me like it's Yale.

And I'll stop being frail,
I'll put on chains and mail,
I'll rise up to the storm,
And stand strong in this gale.

Say you can't stop me storm!
Cause I was born to reign,
No matter rain or hail I'm going to scale
This mountain!

I'm still counting days,
If this was the ocean,
And you a school of fish,
I wish I was a whale.

Musicalish #116

It might be audio only, but I just had to have this one first. ;) Lets make it a double post too! Good music to fuse with. Yeah.
