Constantine (2005)

Constantine (2005)

Keanu Reeves is the man! In this movie the man Constantine. John Constantine. An exorcist and demon hunter professionale, who smokes thirty cigarettes a day and is teetering on the edge between this world and hell. He has a few tricks up his sleeve, though, and he has an apprentice he likes to leave waiting in the cab.

It's a movie full of religious references, but probably not like you've seen before. It doesn't feel angled. It's like religion with a good dose of science fiction; with the myth and 'legend' intact. It really brings you into the fight between Heaven and Hell in a new way, and I like it! It's grim, it's eerie, it's foul and fiery and full of demons. The plot's a real killer too, and as for genre... it's like an action thriller with a bit of horror mixed in.

Again (recent cases being Four Brothers and The Island), this was one of those movies I've seen before that I wasn't expecting that much from, but it was better than I remembered! The atmosphere builds up masterfully, and New York's turned into a different world. It's a bit like Underworld, but a bit less material, and a bit more serious, and a bit more cynical and dark. It's got Shia Lebouf too! And Peter Stormare as the one and only... among many others. I like it. I like Gabriel - the unconventional villian. I like how even at the end not all is revealed, and the special effects have stood their test of time well. Great watch.

Four Brothers (2005)

Four Brothers (2005)

This is the story of four brothers: Bobby, Angel, Jeremiah and Jack Mercer (Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, André Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund), all previously troublesome teens adopted by the former social worker and sweetest women on Earth - Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan). Terrence Howard plays a part as cop, and Chiwetel Ejiofor the big cheese. The sweetest woman on Earth is now dead, and the brothers full-grown citizens.

The plot? The brothers come back to Detroit to attend their mom's funeral - she's been killed in a heist gone wrong, yet when they start doing their investigations it turns out there's more to the robbery than meets the eye. It soon moves to inner conflicts, crooked cops, a shootout, and ultimately... vengeance.

It's crazy, charming and direct. A cold (more so because of the snow) down-to-Earth story of four brothers mashing their way through Detroit slime to get some of their own justice. The plot seems a bit cliche, maybe, but the movie is all but that, with authentic action sequences and a cast with plenty of character. It has some emotional moments, along with plenty of conflict. Great cast. Great watch.

White Chicks (2004)

White Chicks (2004)

This wasn't really my type of comedy, but it did have its moments. Plotwise it's a bit too predictable, but the script makes up for it with plenty of exaggeratedly imaginative comedy. There's one super-memorable scene with Terry Crews too - I mean the dance scene. Not sure why that one song's hyped up so much. It's good, but it's such a short moment. Then there's that part with the dog - one of few moments that really had me burst out laughing.

The fact that some of the scenes not involving the undercover black guys dressed up as white girls are the most memorable must say something about the movie too. Feels like there'd be potential for much more comedy with the latter, considering the idea is both new and crazy.

The plot? Two blacks FBI agents go undercover as white chicks. Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans - both actors I recognize mostly from the Scary Movie franchise. They do a good job playing awkward, and very occasionally serious, and keep it entertaining all the way even if it's all but clean and professional humor (it's more in the action than the act, and at times a bit too much). The costumes are well-done - not so they'd be convincing in real life, but that the other characters don't see through their charade just make it all the more crazy. It's not the type of movie I'd watch again, but it did entertain.

Tell Me How I Die (2016)

Tell Me How I Die (2016)

I thought Ryan Higa (nigahiga) actually directed this movie, but as it turns out he's just an actor within it. He puts on a good performance though, even if it feels weird seeing him in a 'serious' role. Somehow the atmosphere around him just never gets that serious. He's not a serious guy, you know? Prejudice.

But the movie is pretty intense. It's a horror movie with an actually scary premises: a research project gone wrong: An experimental drug meant to enhance memory, that lets the subjects catch glimpses of the future instead. Like they're living a loop. Not in an infinite loop, but once or twice... at least.

Maybe that sounds like a fun idea - but when someone's letting out mustard gas in the ventilation system and stabbing personnel in the ward - and the 'test subjects' aren't allowed to leave before their trial is over, it gets a bit creepy! The atmosphere builds up, and though it's all but perfect, it's probably one of the most authentic scary movies I've seen in a while. One with a genuine idea, and not all too atypical acting. The main characters are all a group of teenagers, sure, and there's a lot of running around in light clothing, and yes the main character is a girl, but it's more than that. It's a good movie.

Just one thing... I didn't get the ending twist I expected! What started out perfect ended a bit too simple. Unimaginative. Complete, but not the way I wanted - and not just because it wasn't a happy ending, but because it could've gone so much deeper. And that's why it gets a 3.
