Ju-On - The Grudge (2002)

Ju-On - The Grudge (2002)

The Japanese can really make a horror movie! Never mind the less authentic shadows and obvious build-ups: they really manage the atmosphere. A creative flare. A little slow-mo. A little creeping. A little noise...

And they're great at making little kids look creepy.

It's mainly about a curse though, and what a curse it is. Is it the pace? Is it the characters? Is it the culture? Whatever it is it really works well for the movie, and along with The Ring (the Japanese one) this is most definitely a cult classic in the scary movie realm. All the effects don't hold, but they weave the story so well otherwise. It's a series of encounters with a series of people, and it all ends... unwell. If there's anything I don't particularly appreciate here it may be the ending. It's not conclusive. In a bad way.

It's definitely better than the Americanized variant with the same name though, from what I remember, though I'm about to watch that one again too, real soon... will see if those recollections still hold.

White Orchid (2018)

White Orchid (2018)

A shy investigator assumes the identity of a small town murder victim in order to solve her gruesome death.

Never expected how that would come back around to haunt her, did you?

It's a movie produced with help of the Bogart Estate, featuring The Rock (an island), and it's just full of surprises, with a main actress (Olivia Thirlby) who looked like she had potential for great things but in the end just didn't keep the facade.

It's a murder thriller detective story with class, about a missing woman who had certain... cravings. It could've been like Basic Instinct but it never took things that far. It handled everything with finesse instead, like in the old days, and that might've been... a good choice after all? Or not, depending on what kind of viewer you are. And what viewers most viewers are.

A classy movie with more elegance than voyeurism: maybe not for the modern world? Maybe just not great enough actors. But it wasn't bad.

 rated 3/5: not bad

Just Because You're Trash...

Just Because You're Trash...

I have no idea who said this first but props Bren The Man on bringing this into my light! I like. Garbage: the world is your can.
