6 Anticipated Movie Sequels 2013 Aftermath

I am way too late posting this thing! But better late than never right? You can find the original post here, and as for my impressions on these long overdue promised sequels (which btw are not just 6 but 12 - something about how many awesome sequels there were this year)...

A Good Day To Die Hard

Yupp, it's still Die Hard! It's better than the 4th one too. I was a bit disappointed to find out McClane's son in the movie wasn't actually his real son, since for some reason I was under that impression. After-Earth was a one of a kind movie at all. This one was great though! And they did seem like father and son in the movie, so much so that I thought the occasional flaw in their acting was a sign of their real life interactions. I wrote a review here.

Monsters University

Monsters wherever they are seem like an awesome bunch, and no less in this one, where the schooling moves on to a whole new level of games and challenges. It's hard to go wrong with a franchise like this.

The World's End

Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright's creative trilogy of collaborations come to an end with this spacey pub run. It starts regular, but quickly gets pretty crazy, and though it has a lot more dialog and a lot less action than the previous movies, it's got that special ingredient that makes it oh so tasty anyway. Mad and amazing. A worthy finale.

Superman - Man Of Steel

The new Superman felt like a great reboot to the old series, though not everyone else seems to agree. Well, I enjoyed it, and that's all that matters right? Will be interesting to see if the Batman V Superman sort-of-sequel tops this.

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

This one blew my mind. Best martial arts movie of the year, hands down. Though, the year was 2014! It was late! Arr. Review here.

Fast & Furious 6

Apart from the 7th, this might've been my favorite Fast & Furious yet. Big budget and crazy, with a charismatic cast and spectacular sceneries, in a time when Paul Walker was well and alive. Review here.

Star Trek 2

Yes! The second Star Trek movie of this new age surpassed my expectations, by not only matching the first, but being even... better? Review here.

Iron Man 3

The third Iron Man was... better than the second, but I still feel like it could've been much more. They're not really reinventing the series with these sequels, they're just playing on the fame of the former. It's cool and all, but contrary to the original the stories of war and carnage don't feel very compelling. Guess they might need to get back to their roots, down to Earth, instead of soaring around with their Iron Man-heads up in the clouds. On the plus side: Mickey Rourke played a pretty good villain.

Edit: Apparently I was thinking of the second Iron Man here, having forgotten entirely what the third one was about. I watched it again, reviewed it, and it was pretty good. Better than the second, but maybe not as good as the first.

Scary Movie 5

Another good scary movie! I was happy to see Simon Rex back as well, despite his at-the-time very controversial gay porn thing, though he played a smaller role than in the last one. Nothing beats the fourth but this... was a good scary movie! And by that a mean: a good sequel within the franchise. Not scary at all, but plenty entertaining.

G.I. Joe - Retaliation

The second G.I. Joe might not have been as fresh with awesome as the first one, but like the second Transformers, it kept going where that one ended. It kept entertaining and delivering plenty of awesome action, even if it couldn't stand up to the first. Also seems like I've somehow missed reviewing this one! I'll rectify that fatal err with a re-watch soon.

What about the less-important, but still pretty cool previously mentioned sequels that were supposed to come out this year, like Evil Dead, Wizard of Oz (Oz the Great and Powerful), Wolverine 2 (The Wolverine), Captain America 2 (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Kick-Ass 2, Red 2, Hunger Games 2 (Catching Fire) and Bad Santa 2, to name a few? Captain America 2 actually came out 2014, and Bad Santa 2 is coming out this year, but the rest of these were all pretty awesome! The Wolverine is a definite runner-up for favorites of the year. Out of all these, the new Wizard of Oz is the only one I still haven't seen.

And as for the sequels I wasn't looking forward to.

Despicable Me 2

I didn't expect much from this one, and it gave me pretty much what I've expected. Entertainment, but not with too much class. I really wish Megamind had been the people's choice.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Might actually want to watch this one. It came out 2014, though.

Grown Ups 2

The second movie was shit too. Or was it? I actually don't remember. I assume that means yes.

Zombieland 2

This one is still in the works, three years later. But it is in the works. Unlike say, Golden Compass...

And that concludes the aftermath for this far-gone year! Let's see how things turn out this one.
