Remember Rihanna's grand movie debut, playing against Swedish Alexander Skarsgård? This is it. I saw it when it came out, but mistakenly remembered it as the first Pacific Rim. My bad. Had to rewatch it to refresh my memory, and...
The special effects were something else! They're the big thing here. Damn. It almost looks like the crew that worked on this movie was the same as the one on the first Transformers movie. The detail level is impressive, even if they didn't get alien lifeforms quite right. And the sound effects don't really feel custom-sculpted for a new franchise. The motions and special effects don't always match, either. And Rihanna can't act.
Or she's learning. Or they made it seem like she couldn't.
It was also interesting seeing Liam Neeson as a captain again! Leading rank. I just watched A-Team, where he had a similar role, but unlike that one - where he sometimes seemed unfit his military ranks - he really fit the mold in this one.
Overall it's all a very American, patriotic, shallow kind of film, but with some pretty bad-ass moments, a good cast, and a story that could almost have been a sequel to Transformers, but with focus on ships. The ship part's cool too. Lots of footage of ships. Technical stuff too, even if the action definitely takes over. It's a blast from start to finish but: nothing to hang up on the (Christmas - but it's not that time yet) tree.
rated 3/5: not bad
