I think I'm starting to like these guys a bit! Maybe all it took was for Gru to go good for the movies to start getting good too... and now when a new villain takes the stage he's fighting on the right side against him. Until he's fired. And is told he has a twin brother. And they all go to see him.
Everyone's in the mix - both Gru and Lucy, and the kids, and the Minions have their own side-story too. It's a bit like half another Minions movie (but without their backstory) and half a Despicable Me... and it's not a bad combination! When they separate there's more space... somehow. The animation's delightfully alive, and cute, and bright and dark and awesome. Their world's both cozy and creatively unique, yet not all unlike the real one, and though the characters do still have somewhat morbidly thin limbs they're all wonderful in their own ways! And so very dynamic.
The classy eighties soundtrack's good fun, as is the stylish outro. Maybe I'm forgetting things about the previous movies, but I feel like this one's the best one yet, and a conclusive segment of the franchise if it really is the final one. Because Gru's no longer the villain? Because the Minions aren't always also present and messing with the scene? Because...? I'm not sure what it is, or if it's any one thing rather than the combination of everything in the movie... but it felt right. I liked it.
Twas a fun, fast-paced, amusing and well-scripted movie for all.
