Sylvester's got a whole new team with him on this one! It might not have anything to do with the original plan - disregarding those superficial ties with shady corporations - and the main character, but it was a pretty intense break-out movie in the same vein nevertheless.
I'm not sure how many of the guys were in the original, if any, but Xiaoming, Bautista and 50 Cent are especially appreciated appearances in this one! Everyone does their job: kicks ass. It's almost like a miniature, themed version of The Expendables. Group together and flow as one.
I wasn't too happy about the special effects in the first scene, but for the prison they work well. It's a futuristic place this time. Computerized. High-tech fancy; with some interesting inmates. I don't get the same sense of isolation as in the previous, but as for the action: it's definitely there! Miss Arnold, but otherwise this was a blast from start to finish, with words of wisdom floating in the main character's head all the way through...
Yes the loose ends are there too, the plot's superficial and the intro's only there to add in previously missing backstory, but I'm still surprised this movie received as low a rating as it did. It really wasn't that bad. If you're looking for a Sylvester-style action movie this is as good as just about any one of them. Don't stress the details. Have fun. Immerse yourself in the prison, until you can feel it in your ever cell...
I almost feel like I have to rate this a bit higher just to make up for all that backlash, but I think I would've scored it the same regardless.
Good watch, and I'm already looking forward to the sequel.
