I thought I'd missed a movie at first! Felt like there might've been a second one wedged between this one and the previous - considering how messy the plot progression seemed here, and how suddenly the villain was personally present.
It does go full circle towards the end, and all things are revealed - bit of a puzzle playing in parallel there plot-wise with the villainous intrigue, but it feels a bit messy the way it's built, and how it's suddenly a thing, whereas in the previous movie there just wasn't any of that going on at all. It was just the rooms.
There's a loose end with the plane too: Whatever happened to the sequel the previous one promised?! I still feel like I'm missing something...
The rooms in this one are good though. They're desperate, and elaborate, but not overly gory or violent.
Compared to the SAW franchise it's refreshingly psychological. Purely a pressure on the mind, not so much on limbs getting torn off; liters of blood and innards being pumped on the tournament floor...
I like what they've done with the genre here. Showed it can be just as good a thriller even without the shock value. And the sceneries and props keep impressing too, unrealistic initial electrical disturbance or no.
Actually I don't know what is unrealistic and what isn't. How would that look in real life. No clue. But the beach scene was beautiful, albeit so quickly transitioned from the real view to one with walls of paper and bubbling sand. Cool effect that.
I really think they would've benefited from bridging the gap between this and the former movie somewhat, with say an Escape Room movie starring a different cast - of which the characters could've become reoccurring ones here too. But apart from that this ain't bad. Great filming.
I'm looking forward to the sequel too, cause it seems there may be one...
rated 4.5/5: almost awesome

This was pretty damn interesting. And yet, nobody's spoken! Be the first!
