Iko Uwais y'all! So you know this'll be a good one, right?
Unfortunately it's not all that.
There are good fights, yes, but the choreography's not the best, the music's too much (impressed they got Phenomenal on here though - and not just that one), and the plot progression's a mess, the script's a mess, the everything's a mess. It's like a bridge between martial arts and fantasy that they just haven't built yet. It doesn't tie together.
The pillars are there, but something's missing.
A few particular points impressed me:
1.) The scene when Uwais is fighting his way down a stairway and then sideslams through a window - filmed from the outside.
2.) The market fight scene.
3.) The realism of the gore in the hotel meeting room and van.
4.) The black girl.
5.) A reference I left blank to research on IMDB and now no longer remember since I'm posting this way too late.
6.) The warmth of the temple area when they meet the girl's uncle.
It all looks cool, and the fights are good, and the friendship gets authentic, I just wish they managed to do it all right. With the fights. Take some more time with it maybe. Maybe that's all they really needed.
rated 3.5/5: not bad at all
My first movie review of a 2022 movie btw? Might be...
