I watched the old one after the new, and what a difference! The special effects weren't all that great, but the details: awesome. Elaborate props for everything, and I appreciated the small plot twists compared to the new... and vice versa. After twenty years the special effects still hold! It feels like an impressively well-budgeted/managed movie for its time.
Robin Williams makes a strong performance too, along with the much younger Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce and Bonnie Hunt. Not to mention the venerable Jonathan Hyde! Props on his very authentic hunter character.
When the animals aren't special effects they too look impressively realistic in this one - most probably because they sometimes are, but also because the props were just really... great! It's worth watching this movie just to appreciate that now somewhat lost artform, as well as the change of scenery, change of plot and the adventure it all entails. It's still great.
