Owner of stranded villa moves back in

The owner of a villa isolated in a 30ft construction pit in China has moved back into the long deserted property.

Yang Wu moved back in to the house in Chongqing city protest a court decision to allow developers to demolish it in three days.

Yang, the former martial-arts champion of Chongqing, climbed into the house on the cliff, bringing in daily necessities with the help of his wife, Wu Ping, and their relatives.

“We will never move out. The court’s decision is biased, and protects the interests of the developers,” he told the Yangtse Evening Post.

Two developers in Chongqing, Zhengsheng Real Estate Company and Nanlong Real Estate Co, plan to redevelop the area into a Broadway square, including apartments and a shopping mall.

They bought out the land belonging to 280 families. Yang was the last, and the only one who has refused to move unless his conditions are met.

“We don’t want money, we only want a shop of the same size in the same area. But they refuse to give us one,” he complained.

Yang’s stand has held up the £40m project for more than three years, and the developers have dug a deep pit around his villa.

His wife, Wu Ping, says life in the villa is extremely difficult for her husband, but he will continue to live there while she appeals to a higher court.

“There’s no water or electricity, and as soon as the court announced its verdict, the developers bulldozed the only ramp leading to the house. Now my husband is stranded there,” she said.
