Bishop’s ‘gift of time’
A leading bishop has been handing out egg timers to commuters to give them the “gift of time”.
The Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Reading, is urging us all to slow down and find time to dawdle.
He declared that taking long lie-ins, resting, and easing off from work can lead to “an adventure of self-discovery and creativity”.
Bishop Cottrell stopped passengers at Reading railway station on Monday morning to offer them egg timers.
He pointed to a recent study which said the pace of life in British cities, as measured by the speed at which pedestrians walk, had gone up by 10% in a decade.
His advice to commuters suggested that they should spend three minutes sitting silently and still each day to give themselves a chance to see life differently.
“By learning to sit still, slow down, by discerning when to shut up and when to speak out, you learn to travel through life differently,” he said.
“There is a new delight and purpose in the mundane and the ordinary things of life. Making tea becomes a treat, travelling to work an adventure.”
