EMP Weapon

World War 2 saw the beginning of the use of electronic devices in the aid of conventional weaponry. A secret war was waged between English and German Electronic and communication engineers both trying desperately to surpass the other’s latest technological breakthrough. This secret war was centered around the use of of radar equipment to detect an incoming air attack on either country. EMP devices or as it is more known Electromagnetic Pulse Weaponry was used to incapacitate the trancievers used to detect attacking fighter planes. EMP was heavily developed with the intent of creating a device that could drop planes out of the sky by disabling their electronic equipment, superpowers during the cold war raced against each other in a secret war to outclass each others’ EMP technical superiority. When one side would develop an EMP weapon capable of dropping rockets out of the sky the other would develop a technique to nullify its effects and the technology war would go on with no apparent victor in the long run.

An Electromagnetic Pulse can be generated during the explosion of a Nuclear weapon, this is why it is said that a nuclear blast high above a city would decapacitate all the electronic and electrical devices below. EMP works on the concept that an Electromagentic wave striking an electronic circuit would induce the circulation of an electric current in the circuit and since such normal circuits are sensitive to such high currents they are destroyed or faulted by the wave. It was named a Pulse because it is usually of a non continuous nature especially when studied in nuclear weapons. EMP Weapons are usually harmless to people except in very high concentrations.

Scientists discovered that a nuclear bomb was not necessary to create an EMP Weapon and they managed to produce EMP weapons of considerably small size, the idea was to create an EMP suitcase bomb that could be taken into an enemy building and detonated without casualties with the destruction of all electrical equipment in the building paralyzing the enemy data center.

The primary technique of fighting against such weaponry was to develop metal shields to house the electronic appliance, the military developed highly reliable microchips and electronic devices that are impervious to the majority of EMP attacks, these high tolerance electronics are commonly used in all military applications especially in the airforce.

There are several major lines of thought concerning the construction of EMP weaponry, one deals with the construction of small EMP devices that could be easily concealed and deployed while the other involves the construction of a large parabolic dish which concentrates the energy of a magnetron generator into a specific direction destroying all electronics in its path. A mini EMP device can be easily improvised if the correct equipment is available however the majority of such devices are more useful to cause severe intereference in communications equipment rather than being able to take out entire buildings.
