Anvil - The Story Of Anvil (2008)

Anvil - The Story Of Anvil (2008)

Anvil was one of many heavy metal bands that popped up during the eighties, and one of the unlucky few that (despite great musical talent) didn't really make it big. This is their story.

As with most band documentaries the movie is a mash-up of real show footage, interviews, and just random film from their daily lives, detailing a journey from a pinnacle of fame, back to a more depressing and not-so-glorious now, and then back into the future again, ending with one big attempt at getting back into the music business - a show of hope.

The whole movie is one big promo for the band, but that's OK, it was interesting to watch, and considering I'd never really heard of Anvil before I watched this... it must be working! Looks like they did attain some renewed fame after this movie was released too. I'm glad. They seem like a creative bunch of people, they make good music, they deserve another shot. Rock on!

So Undercover (2012)

So Undercover (2012)

Somehow I ended up watching an action comedy with Miley Cyrus... maybe more of a slice of life/romance/drama with a little action comedy. It's a feel-good movies that ends up... feeling almost too good. It's too stereotypical. It's the corny of Kick Ass without the brutality to balance it out.

The plot is a mesh of relationships, Miley going undercover, her dad with a gambling problem, her employer the *no spoiler*, her friends not her real friends, her enemies her real friends, her friends her enemies... all in all it's not so bad, but it leaves me with an eyebrow raised and half a smile, like 'so this is it..'. but it was OK.

I'm not sure what I was expecting though, for the intended audience (lower age group; females) this probably delivers exactly what it's supposed to. It wasn't made for me.

One Direction - This Is Us (2013)

One Direction - This Is Us (2013)

I've never been much for boy bands. The Beatles were OK, but modern boy bands... nah, not my style. Too oriented towards the opposite gender maybe (just watch the crowds!), so... watching a movie like this isn't the norm! I try to keep an open mind. :P

Their music isn't so bad, though it's definately not something I'd appreciate listening to in the long run. It's catchy, feelgood, not with the emotional depth that seems to charecterise my favorites, but there's no denying the group really is a collection of musical characters. They seem like a fun bunch too, as the one band member says, they try not to take things too seriously; go day by day. Mixed in with concert footage and interviews with both members of the band and everyone they work with are the occasional streaks of mischievery and randomness. Nuts. :?

Two dudes really look like the two from Sum 41 too. I've never listened to the group before this, and I won't start now, but it was a fun watch. In the end, it was a bit of a spirit lifter, an inlook on a bright side of life, on a group of people who really made it and seem to enjoy the life they live. Good watch.

Riddick (2013)

Riddick (2013)

Ah, Riddick, getting left for dead again, on some remote planet somewhere outside our solar system. Fighting foes, finding food, lighting a rescue beacon that calls on a ton of bounty hunters, that get involved in one big manhunt, that shows who's got heart and who hasn't, who's got spine, who's next in line, and who climbs the skies at the end of the day.

It's all the same thing, really, same thing as previous movies, but this time without any of the awesome civilized sights and sceneries. This time it's all wilderness. Plenty of action, a good plot, but much more waiting and much less moving around than the previous ones. I like how down to earth the movie is, but at the same time it's not as pompous as it used to be, not so much to see, it doesn't climb to the same heights of grandeur and awesomeness and this time there aren't that many humane critters involved in the fight.

It's not so much about gunfights and blades flying through the air as it is just a struggle for survival. I guess that's the way it's meant to be, though. Good movie.

Damn, Van Damme!

Man am I glad this guy is still sticking a round, what a shame it'd have been to the movie industry if he just split!

UPD: Original removed, found a replacement copy. Also this.

Oblivion (2013)

Oblivion (2013)

Woah, Oblivion was an inspiring movie! I even wrote a rhyme about it, though I was in such an inspirational daze that the lines turned out completely unstructured and impossible to sing without much revising, which would completely ruin the amazing moment of the tune, but anyway... this movie reminded me a bit of the Moon.

I'm not sure I should reveal why, because that would probably reveal the plot a bit too much, but here's the a quick debrief: aliens invaded the world, humanity fought them off but failed to save the planet, radiation levels are high and humanity is sucking out the remaining natural resources to move to Titan with a huge spaceship named the Tet.

Our main character lives together with his partner on a constructed contraption above the clouds, repairing droids and monitoring preparation progress. It seems to be a rather lonely life, but even though they are cut off from the rest of the world they have each other, and their home is a paradise of sorts. It's sleek, modern; futuristic, and the life is both routined and adventurous.. but then one day, stuff happens.

The filming is beautiful, post-apocalyptic in a realistic way, unreal in a way that so many earlier movies aspire to portray a wasted world but not many actually manage. It's hard to know which parts of the sceneries are actually real (maybe built specifically for the film) and which are just digital art. It's a magnificent post-apocalyptic world, and though there's plenty of action there's a rather calm pace to the action, with breaks for drama/romance and even a little... thriller. All actors do a great job, except maybe the one (who I shouldn't reveal without spoiling the plot). If you like Sci-Fi this is definitely worth the watch! It's a movie on par with Elysium, two great sci-fi releases this year.
