Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Day After Tomorrow (2004)

What if the world would end tomorrow? What would it be like the day after that? I've actually had a few theories about a second ice age, and the people who made this script apparently stole my idea... unless it popped up in their heads before mine. Either way, they have their rights reserved, I'm not about to do battle over them. :)

This movie is not a very scientific movie, but its full of action, great special effects and amazing scenery (most of it digital). Before the 'apocalypse' there are lots of people, after, there aren't that many any more. It starts off with a lot of actors but after the event they've dwindled drastically, and then the real adventure starts, in a barren and isolated world. If you like unrealistic stuff (fantasy), you should see this. It's a thrilling adventure.

Con Air (1997)

Con Air (1997)

Con air is a great movie with body comedy, action and style. It's the story of a young man coming home from the military to meet his loving wife. A bunch of drunk assholes looking for trouble provoke him and he accidentally kills one of them, which sends him to prison for 7 years. During this time his little girl grows up. They exchange letters, presents, and he waits patiently for the day that he will finally get out of prison. When this day finally arrives he is to be transported in the flying prison, Con Air, to meet his wife and daughter.

At about this point 10 minutes of the movie have passed and the real plot develops. What starts as a routine flight doesn't stay a routine flight for long. Nicholas Cage plays the main character, and there are a few other semi-known actors in the movie along with him, all doing a great job. Most of the movie takes place aboard the plane, but far from all of it. There is a lot of variety, a mixture of different personalities, good music, and a simple yet tense plot. I watched this movie yesterday night, and this isn't the first time I see it. Even if you're not a big Nicholas Cage fan, it's great action!

Waitress (2007)

Waitress (2007)

Romance and Drama, with a little Comedy mixed in. The main character is a girl who constantly thinks of nothing but pies. Her boyfriend is an asshole, she's getting a baby, her doctor isn't the same as before and her friends are having troubles of their own.

It really wasn't my kind of movie. As I see it I could just get a life instead of watching this, and it would be just the same thing. We watch movies to experience things we can't (or that we really shouldn't) do in real life. At least I do. There was nothing extreme or amazing about this movie at all, so it really doesn't have what I want to get when I watch a movie. A thrill. Inspiration. Action. Something... out of the ordinary. Less wait. Less rest.

Not to say it was a bad movie, but it wasn't made for me.

Hot Shots (1991)

Hot Shots (1991)

Hot Shots is a great parody featuring the life of a previously traumatized fighter pilot on his mission to save the nation, to overcome his fears and to pursue his fathers dreams and visions. As a side story, it also features his romance with the psychologist, an evil plan from a plane manufacturer, and the story of some other pilots with less luck than himself. Lots of witty events in this, I laughed nonstop while watching this. It's exaggerated and insane, but still not too exaggerated, and the storyline is a great one. Btw, the movie this parody is based upon is Top Gun, one which I haven't seen and one which there is no need to see with a great movie like this as an alternative. I highly recommend it!

Hot Shots 2 (1993)

Hot Shots 2 (1993)

Another great parody featuring the same characters as the first one, and many more. I didn't get as much of a laugh watching this one as I did during the last though. Sure, there are a lot of funny situations depicted in this one, but they just don't seem to affect me anymore. Is it because they're so exaggerated? Is it because there's too many of them? Is it because I've watched this movie twice now? I don't know, but that's the way it is. If you haven't seen the first one, it's a military parody featuring the life of a Soldier, now retired, that comes back into play to take out a deadly threat in the middle east. Great actors, great filming and a good storyline as well, but it just doesn't do the getting-me-to-laugh-crazily job right. If you haven't watched the first one, and you need to chose between that and this, see that one instead.

One (2001)

One (2001)

There's not one universe, there are many. A multiverse, 125 different universes, all linked together. There is not one entity, there are many. There are 124 entities, all linked together. IOW, there are 124 more people who look like you, living parallel lives in different universes. The universes do differ though. In one world you might be a cop, in another a robber, and that's exactly the situation with the main character in this movie. In one universe, a squad has been built to keep law and order between these parallel verses. One of the people in this unit, Yulaw, once had to confront himself in a different universe, and ended up killing him. The energy from the victim flowed into him, and the other parallel versions of him, and he became addicted. He kept going, killing off more and more of his parallelities, becoming stronger and stronger. This is the story of his encounter with the very last parallel 'him'. Things aren't as easy this time as they've been earlier. This time, his opponent fights back, and two time agents join in to further complicate things. It's a simple, yet unique plot, with a heavy metal soundtrack that really suits it.

At the end when the two Jet Li's (whatever their movie names) are having their final showdown and Papa Roaches tune pops into the background, with him singing "is it our nature to kill ourselves, is it our nature to destroy ourselves, is it our nature to kill each other..." the song gets a whole new meaning, heh. The actors are good, specially Jet Li, who plays both main characters, as well as one of the previous victims at the start of the movie. Wonder how long it took to film everything.

The special effects are a bit crappy at times. The movie isn't that old, so I think they could have done a better job when it comes to that. If you look closely you'll notice a few mistakes they make, and some situations are just too unreal, like when Yulaw lifts up two motorbikes, one in each hand, and squeezes a cop. His superpowers seem a bit unreliable as he sometimes does crazy things and at other times seems unable to... but other than that this is a truly good movie. The fighting scenes are great, obviously, with Jet Li in them. x2. Jason Statham plays a semi-major role as well. Any movie with him in it is a good movie... so far. If you like action like I do you'll love this movie, despite the digital flaws. Recommended.
