Returner (2002)

Returner (2002)

The Japanese make ET like the American never could. As if an Alien is too boring, they decided to throw in some triads, a lone hitman, a timetravelling kid and a plot that will twist your mind. It's all about saving the alien so that aliens won't attack the world in the future and blow it all to shit, but that's really just a side-story. The main story is avenging a killed buddy, attaining a new buddy, and inspiring people to eat Al Dente (okay maybe not that last part). It's a great movie, even though it feels like they snatched the plot from ET, Terminator and mixed in some special effects from the Matrix to make this plot. But, it's a great movie, a gem. Maybe you haven't seen it yet? You're missing out on some good ol emotional action!

I'm not saying the actors are perfect though. When Milly keeps nodding at the end, or when the main character could have just finished off all the enemies but chose to do some fancy bullet-dodging-maneuvers instead, well, there are inconsistencies, but it doesn't spoil the action! It's the second time I'm watching this over a long span of time, and it was worth the re-watch. It's that kind of movie. Oh look, I'm hyping too much, I'm making this seem like it's fantastic when it's only great. ;D Anyway, before this review spirals out of control I'm just going to leave a quick..

Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008)

Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008)

Journey To The Center Of The Earth is a story about a kid and his father, and a great adventure, one that takes them all the way to the center of the world. There's a lot of Jules Verne references here, along with some exiting scenery. There's a lot of traveling and even a little getting somewhere, and did I mention it's not animated? Yeah, it might not really be for my age, but it was a fun watch anyway! It's kinda like the Narnia series in that the character all go through something and end up in a entirely different world, a world that seems fantastic and fictitious and mostly for kids, but that's where the similarities end! Overall, good adventure movie. :)

Inception (2010)

Inception (2010)

I never did write a real review for Inception. I'm always going on about how great it is, but I've never really said why. After I initially watched it I commented on how it was my favorite movie of all time and always would be, but now... it still is. :)

I'm no longer as sure as I was back then that it'll always be, but then again, it's been a while since I last watched this movie, so maybe I'm forgetting it's true grandeur, because it really is an amazing flick. At the time of watching, both the first and second and third time and so on, I could find no flaws with it. Not in the filmography, not in the soundtrack, not in the actor performances, not in the special effects, not in the logic... nowhere.

All the people I speak to who don't like this movie (yes, they do exist!) argue that it makes no sense, and I feel they just don't have a mind open enough for the concept of Inception. Inception is a concept itself, apart from the movie, and it is a deep concept. Maybe the movie doesn't fully formulate all of the aspects of Inception, but it does a great job at tying up all the loose ends of the plot that is introduced, and it does so in a very artistic and exiting way. There's not a moment in the movie when I was bored, and the soundtrack was magnificent, brining the tension levels to new peaks all the time. At the time I watched it, it was one of the few movies that I had been able to see all the way through without wanting to skip a single segment. I guess I was bored of movies in general, but suddenly I didn't want to miss out on a single conversation because everything that was said actually held something of value.

Content-wise, this was a very feature-filled flick. It had depth, it had drama, it had action, it had (real) love, it had suspense, it had horror, it had tragedy, it had happiness, it had surprise, it had expectation, it had hope, it had doubt. It combined so much more than you normally count into the core elements of a movie, and it combined them perfectly. The more I write about this movie, the more I feel that it still is and always will be a masterpiece. The fact that it's currently ranked #14 on IMDBs top 250, along with old classics such as and Scarface, probably proves my theory... or something. In time, maybe it will climb, as all old classics seem to do. First impressions are dangerous things.

If you still haven't seen this movie, and it seems like one you'd like, do it! Watch it! Right now (well maybe not if you're at work or something, in which case it might not be entirely suitable). But if you don't think you'll like it, don't watch it, cause I don't want to hear more bitching about how bad at is. Turns out tastes aren't always for everyone, even if they are awesome. :) You already know what I'm going to rate this but I'll rate it anyway. Here goes...

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

This movie is just completely random. It's random. Completely. If you've read the book you'll know what I mean. Actually, I haven't read the book, I just read the comics, but they were awesome. A lot of book critics are mad at the movie for not being like the book, but I guess that's normal. I'm not saying this movie is better than the book, but it was a good movie, creative like other movies won't ever be this century. Like, you wonder why a whale is thinking about a flowerpot while falling down, or contemplating existence, and why is 42 the answer to everything? Oh, Earth is about to be demolished to make way for a interstellar space highway, and this one normal dude is just trying to prevent his normal house from vanishing in smoke on this very same day. How it all plays out? Watch the movie! Regardless if you've read the book or not, it should at least be entertaining. :)

In Time... I might write a review for this great movie. ;)

I Am Legend (2007)

I Am Legend (2007)

It seems like Will Smith always gets all the good roles, especially lead roles and especially in awesome movies like this, but then again, he is a great actor...

Anyway, about the movie itself, it's a great movie. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world roamed by zombie-like creatures at night, completely vacant during the day, except for Will Smith, that is. Cause he was immune to whatever wiped out the rest of the population, and in NY, he is now the only person still alive. He goes about his regular routines, hunting deer in the city, driving a Mustang, golfing from a rusty cargo ship, saying 'Hello!' to mannequins behind the glass, experimenting on zombies in his basement, etcetc. It all changes when he meets a survivor, though, and it looks like the zombies are getting smarter, too!

This movie was actually released in two versions, one were he dies at the end and one were he survives. I hope I'm not spoiling the movie by saying so, cause you probably don't know which version you'll be watching anyway, and it's not saying much about how the movie really ends. :) It's a good movie. At times it is a bit... empty, not much going on, but as it progresses it gets more and more exiting. Kinda like Night of the Living Dead.

It's not your typical zombie movie as there aren't people getting limbs torn off and blood and gore and guts everywhere, but still, it is a zombie movie. If you like those, or you like the last-man-on-Earth type of movies, this is a must-see, with one of my favorite actors as lead character too. :)
