We Still Kill The Old Way (2014)

We Still Kill The Old Way (2014)

If you've seen Harry Brown (2009), this is similar. A bunch of old dudes (a bunch this time, not just the one - and they're all pre-criminal, not pre-army) get back into the game and show they've still got it, and make the world a better place while they're at it. They do this primarily to avenge the main character's older brother - recently beat to death by the incredibly overconfident, arrogant and verbally obscene teenage gang who goes by the name of E2 - but there may be other motives.

There's a little romance. There's a little bonding. There's also something about that British accent and way with words that makes everything the E2 gang say seem so incredibly vicious. You really feel the threat in each word, the hate, the ill manner in the manor, even if they after a while seem to lose their edge in their inability to actually kill more people. The old guys do most of that (strong personalities btw).

It was a good watch! Compared to Harry Brown: a bit brighter, but equally brutal.

The Drop (2014)

The Drop (2014)

In a certain neighborhood, there are certain bars, on which every once in a while considerable amount of money is dropped. You never know which bar, you don't know by who, and you never get to know how much. You do get to follow the life of one of people working in one of these bars. He goes by the name of Bob (Tom Hardy), and the bar has his cousin Marv's (James Gandolfini) name in it's billboard, but is actually owned by a bunch of shady Chechens.

One day Bob finds a beat up dog in a trash can, meets Nadia, owner of said trashcan (Noomi Rapace) and soon after Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), previous owner of the beat-up dog left in said trash can.

Bob doesn't always seem too smart. He lives his own life, he doesn't say much, he does most of the work while Marv complains about all injustices in life, and eventually... it's time for the drop.

It was a laid-back type of action movie, with more contemplative scenes than with violence. Good acting, cold suburban sceneries, occasionally people, dialog, a glimpse into another side of the world that maybe you don't usually see, all very professional and reserved. Suspenseful even if it wasn't very eventful. Good watch.

Gone Girl (2014)

Gone Girl (2014)

Here's a tale of marriage, with a twist... and one that doesn't end! It's like the start of a series, and I got hooked! I want to see the rest of it, but there's nothing coming! It's a search for something... but they never find it! It's a case... that's never solved! It's over, but it never ends!

I hesitated with watching this one because it had 'girl' in the title, as in: doesn't seem like a very masculine movie, didn't seem to be much about action. But it had a different kind of action. It was a surreal tale of relational struggle featuring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, in which the latter disappears and the former goes searching, in which part of the narration is written in the form of a diary, in which the search is seen from both parties, the one alive, and the one presumed dead, and I wish to tell no more with risk that I might spoil the very bizarre, yet surprisingly clear and clever plot.

I didn't really like it, but all the same it blew my mind. It made me wonder, made me see people in new ways, made me question the future, the world... it defeats all attempts to review.

Penguins Of Madagascar (2014)

Penguins Of Madagascar (2014)

The Penguins of Madagascar finally get their own solo performance! A hyper ton-of-action venture through the canals of Venice, the streets of Shanghai, a short visit down in the desert and eventually back to the US of A!

It starts with a flashback: how their life started in the cold harsh climate of the icy Arctic, a film crew filming them in the background as their queue of different-minded similars all tried to be cute and cuddly (better get used to immense amounts of unmentionable comical details!) and quickly moves past their first adventure as kids to their full-blown Birthday-celebrating infiltration of Fort Knox. There they meet up with an old enemy they didn't know they had, and things start to get interesting!

It's a real masterpiece in animation, it keeps you entertained, and the only thing that brings the score down from a solid 5 to a strong 4 are small details such as certain character stereotypes *cough* Northwind *cough* and predictable twists of the plot, and though it's awesome hearing Peter Stormare voicing the polar bear, I don't think his overly Scandinavian accent was the right one for the role. Overall though, it was the biggest batch of fun I've had in a long time! Great watch.

Outcast (2014)

Outcast (2014)

I thought Nicholas Cage would have the lead role in this one, but it turns out it was an unknown, Hayden Christensen. They're both soldiers in the crusade, they reach a crossroad and on their bloodiest battle, Gallian (Nicholas Cage) wants to stop, but Jacob (the other guy) pushes on - even if he doesn't want to. It's a slaughter. And at that moment their paths part.

And then onto Asia, where a king is dying, his eldest son wants the throne, the youngest son is given the throne, but the eldest son kills his pops and tells the soldiers that the young prince killed the king. The young prince escapes with his sister, and during their escape they stumble upon Jacob, trying to escape his past, high on Opium at a peaceful mountain inn. Well, it's peaceful until the evil brother's army shows up!

The sceneries are beautiful, the battles are glorious, poetic, and sad and tragic... it has all that traditional Asian intrigue along with even English voices for all the Eastern characters. A bridge of cultures... and I like it! Good watch.

By The Gun (2014)

By The Gun (2014)

This was a gritty, killer, thriller: a movie where this one guy (Nick, played by Ben Barnes) realizes that a life of crime may not be all it's hyped up to be. And yet it's the life he choses, no matter what. His pop doesn't want to talk to him. His younger brother is involuntarily following in his footsteps. His best friend ends up accidentally killing the father of a girl he likes/loves, who also happens to be on friendly terms with the mob for which he works.

It's a sad story, but it's told in a good way, with a little gritty violence, suburban sceneries and a glimpse into that everyday underworld life, which is mostly talk and just a little killing. There's one entirely nude stripper too, somewhat unusual even for a movie like this, but I appreciate it as in: it really seems to depict what that life is like, in all it's uncensored brutality and beauty alike.

In the end it's the kind of movie I can't find anything to complain about, it was good, I didn't skim a second, but when it's all over... why did I watch it? What did I get out of this? What a depressing tale.
