Krrish 3 (2013)

Krrish 3 (2013)

So, I actually watched this sequel before I'd watched the original Krrish movie, but I guess that's a good thing cause it turns out the original was even better than this. I'm not here to review the original though (well, in a moment I will), just this one, and it was: great.

I actually did a search recently for 'Indian Superman' and it turns out there is a movie with that exact name, from way back in 1979. Haven't been able to get my hands on that one, but it looks like it is far from the only Indian superhero movie, as this one shows. I'm not sure if this one's inspired by Batman or Superman, considering Krissh (the superhro in this story) looks a bit like the first, but acts more like the latter. Similarly to the latter, it's also the story of two brothers, and Krissh's wife is a journalist, and eventually he attains some pretty awesome flying powers that let him soar through the air just by extending one fist. More like Superman I guess. :)

That's where the similarities end though, it's a story with much more love and emotion involved than the American version/original, and along with that there's a deadly virus, a mad scientist soon-to-be nemesis with a small army of mutants (some X-men influence all of a sudden), who's handicapped, sits in a wheel chair but can control objects through telekenisis. Eventually he builds himself a suit of metal scraps that he shreds off walls with his mind... but that's where the similarities end!

Compared to the first movie, this one is much more fast-paced, features much more special effects, has much more action, and has... well it has much more of everything except maybe personality. The introductory flashback into what's happened in the past almost made me stop watching, it was a mess, a mesh of aliens and fathers and sons and accidents and deaths and wh-wh-wait what am I watching again? First Bollywood science-fiction movie I see btw, wonder if this is the norm.

But after that, it cools down.

And speaking of cool, Krrish is by far the coolest superhero out of the ones I've seen so far, that's one thing Indians know how to manage! The final battle, despite all the special effects, is incredibly well-done too, though I'm glad I watched this first because the first is definitely my favorite of the two, though there's no denying this is a worthy sequel.

Fun trivia: this is both the 2nd and 3rd movie in the series. For some reason it changed titles. It's really the second movie, though. Well actually Krrish was the second movie, and Koi… Mil Gaya was the first. So Krrish was the second, but Krrish 3 was the 2nd Krrish. Guess I'll have to watch the first one next... but first, a review on the second one, the prequel to this.

Special Chabbis (2013)

Special Chabbis (2013)

18.03.1987

Based on a real life group of con artists who pulled off many clever robberies during 1980s, and robbed famous businessmen and politicians by pretending to be the CBI or Income tax officers...

That about sums it up! Oh, and did I mention it was a great movie? Like the Bollywood version of Oceans 11, without all the bling bling, it's my thing thing.

It's down to Earth, it's clever, it's the story of a group of different people, cops and robbers... and the fact that it's all based on a true story makes it all the better. And not to forget, the main character is played by the same actor who played Rowdy Rathore - Akshay Kumar (maybe the first Bollywood name I know that'll stick... at least the last name).

Conclusively: go watch it, unlike Dhoom & Don it doesn't seem to be catered towards an internationally audience, it's not so flashy, there's not so much spoken English, but that just makes it even better.

Oh, and a great music video as the credits roll. Thought that might be best appreciated if you've watched the film. :)

Raajneeti (2010)

Raajneeti (2010)

I watched this movie because I was reccomended it, but it turned out way too plain. It's a... drama! There's little action, there's tension, but still somehow it all... doesn't concern me, the plot doesn't grip me that tightly. I'm assuming that political thrillers concerning exotic cultures might not be my thing, but I think it's more of the atmosphere that I don't like. It's serious, it's unfair, it's concerned. It's not the type of atmosphere I watch Bollywood movies to watch, and it doesn't have a plot that I can relate to or one that manages to either surprise, inspire or entertain me. A good movie in many aspects no doubt, but not one I particularly enjoyed. Don't take my word for it, other reviews claim it's fantastic so maybe you'd get things out of it that I didn't!

The World's End (2013)

The World's End (2013)

This movie was crazy. Crazy in a good way.

I'm not sure I liked the ending (I like the way it ends, don't get that wrong, I just feel like it was all rather sillily acted out - it had so much potential and yet it seems they just wasted it somehow). The end is really a topic I could post an entire blog about, but lets not delve into matters which transcend our understanding... like some religious people say. OK, well let me just say that I think it ends the way it ends because this is the third part in a set of three movies made by the same two directors (Simon Pegg and that other one), and it seems the endings (along with the character roles) are intentionally varied in each one. They all have a distinct twist to them, almost like there's a pattern, and this is the final one so there's more of... eh... some element of emotion that completes the pattern? Some variation to the form of surprise? Some variation to the amount of characters who survive? Also, that Cornetto part made me realize the big guy does have some awesome acting potential (plus Cornetto seems to a theme in all three moves... brand advertising I wonder?). But moving on...

The movie itself starts off rather regularly. I was actually not so hyped up about watching this movie particularly because of this deemed regularity. The movie is supposedly just about a group of friends getting back together and going for a golden mile: a run through twelve pubs total for one pint each. That sounds a bit dull, doesn't it? Well fortunately the plot is much more elaborate than that, it's a grand sci-fi conspiracy, with plenty of comedy, plenty of action, chases, drama, romance... the whole suite.

It also has a great set of characters and tons of conversation... which I'd expect would lower the entertainment value, but it's strange how British movies always manage to turn conversation to their benefit whereas other nations often make it the most boring part.

One of the things I admire with not just this movie but the two previous ones are the introductory flashbacks, which are so detailed it's like they are separate movies. Everything is filmed in a both playful and genius manner, with plenty of references to the previous two movies, and references to other general comedy along the way. It's just a blast to watch. Roles are reversed, tension builds up, characters break down, it goes one way then the other, and smack in the middle you have kids having their heads chopped of and spewing blue goo. From the very first frame till somewhere just before the end, this was a movie to enjoy! Not non-stop action mind you, but non-stop eventfulness. Great work!

Singham (2011)

Singham (2011)

Here's another Bollywood movie about a supercop, very similar to the Rowdy Rathore that come out the year after. This time it's also about corruption, but instead of a village being owned by some rich criminal, it's now an entire city, an entire police department is bribed, the main character stumbles into this corruption by chance aaand... with some trial and error, and merciless tactic, he sorts it all out.

Though I don't particularly mind it, some of the digital effects in this movie are all but realistic. People getting slammed into ground, and then flipping over from the force of the slam, cars cartwheeling around, the main character dragging out a criminal from a car as it's barrel-rolling above his head... realism isn't the strongest aspect of this movie. Despite this, it has a lot of strong emotion. At times it's comical, at times it's tense, and of course there's a little (but just a little in this one!) romance and dancing mixed in.

No spectacular dance scenes, a bit too spectacular sound effects when punches are raining down, and those crazy effects... but after seeing this, I'm on my way to see another one. So it can't be all that bad, can it! Entertainment factor: GREAT. Not as good as Rowdy though.

Rush (2013)

Rush (2013)

Rush is the story of racing, of two drivers who despite their differences are really quite similar, though by a twist of fate end up bitter enemies. One is care-free and crazy, the other's reserved and ambitious. The first lives for racing, the second lives for success, whatever it may be. OK so maybe they're not so similar after all, and yet there's something that brings them together, tears them apart; makes them the most vicious competitors.

These two drivers are Nicki Lauda and James Hunt, rivals, friends, enemies... and the movie is an exciting tale that almost looks like it may be (wait let me check... it is!) based on a real story. The names are real, the story's real, the time is 1970something (though it looks like it was just yesterday :P).

It's a tale of personalities, fates and racing, and two spectacular people. Great watch.
