Police Story 3 - Supercop was so popular that they made a sequel (this movie is also called Supercop 2)! But it's not really a sequel, it's a standalone story, and a love story to top it off. Michelle Yeoh is back at it again, but this time she has a boyfriend. She's still a cop, and it turns out he's a robber, so there's plenty of potential for drama right there. He leaves for HK and promises to come back a rich man and marry her, and a while later, she leaves for HK to help out with a police investigation, and chase down a group of criminals, ex soldiers from Vietnam, who are gathering together and planning something big. It turns out her boyfriend is the leader of the group.
Jacky Chan makes a guest appearance, and adds some much-needed comedy to an otherwise very somber plot, but it's not enough. The reason this movie didn't match up with the prequal wasn't because Jackie wasn't in it, it was because it wasn't fun. It was tragic. It features great fights, but even more so a gritty almost apocalyptic milieu where the good guys don't always win, but the bad guys definitely don't either.
I was introduced to Siu-Wong Fan at least, a martial artist I've probably seen in a few other movies but not thought that much about. It looks like he was at peak performance in this movie though, so I hope to see some other flicks from similar time. He's definitely the most acrobatic artist in the movie.
It was a good watch, though unnecessarily gritty at times. Feels like they tried too hard to make something epic; succeeded in making something you'll appreciate but probably not throne in memory.
rated 3/5: not bad
