Project - Shower In The Dark

When I entered the bathroom today with the intention of showering, I accidentally flipped the light switch off. I was about to flip it back on again, when I started wondering what it'd be like to shower in the dark. It seemed like a somewhat dangerous escapade, a regular-day adventure... so I did. I showered in the dark.

At first it really felt like pitch black, like total darkness, but I must admit it wasn't really total darkness. We have a tiny little green led light on a device on the wall regulating humidity, and by the end of the shower session my eyes had adjusted enough so that this tiny light actually revealed all the contours within the bathroom. I couldn't really see the nether regions of my body, but I could see the contours of the (white) carpet, a subtle reflection in the mirror, the edges of the bathtub (in which the shower is located), the toilet seat (nearest this lighting device) and the lines of floor, door and ceiling closest to the light source.

When I was in the shower, shielded by the shower curtain, I could faintly see contours when I moved, and at times I looked into the wall and almost panicked when these contours disappeared completely and there really was: only darkness, even with eyes open. Real darkness is a bit of a scary thing. Even if you switch off the light at night, it's not probable there won't be any light source, somewhere, shining through a gap in the window blinds or a creak in the door, maybe just the keyhole - shedding light on your dark surroundings.

It was however an interesting experience, and when I once again flipped the light back on (after the shower) the light was surreal. Being able to see everything in such bright detail was an awesome experience! It's a bit like walking around with cotton stuffed in your ears a while, and then taking it out, you re-evaluate and appreciate your senses anew. So if you have somewhat regular vision, do this sometime: delve into the darkness! The light will shine so much brighter on the other side.
