OK, so they've added relationship troubles, an Asian guy, a girl, and Anthony Hopkins, but apart from them it's the same cast we grew used to in the first movie. There's plenty of action (obviously), bombs, chases, the deal. Fun watching but... in this one specifically I can't help feeling that all the main characters are just too old for this shit. Well, everybody except for the Asian guy, he still looks OK, and Anthony Hopkins actually seems more energetic than most of the cast. Willis just doesn't have the same energy he had in the classics, just that glare that's characterized him since then... and the others... nah. It's not a bad movie, it's a great action flick, but compared to the old one it's just... well it's the same old thing, crazier but with all the more loose-ends, with most people already introduced and tiring, and a plot that skips like an old vinyl. Entertaining to watch, but it's just-another-sequel, that's how it feels.
rated 3/5: not bad
The second one: did it stand up to the first? Not really. The characters are great (props Neal McDonough) and the action's great (plenty of explosions) and the comedy's the same: sometimes kind of lame but... how ever did Frank get so overprotective?! Though it is a major plot element that sort of ruined it for me. Imagine if Frank and Sarah had been a killer duo at this point, like the ending on the prequel seemed to promise? That + the rest of this movie... that would have been good.
There is some eighties synth though, stylish outro art (that looks like it was made for an entirely different movie), Anthony Hopkins, Byung-hun Lee, love, gunfights, an awesome explosion in the sky, plenty of infiltration and inside skirmishes... three's also a lot of cliche and skipping around for no reason until... it ends like it ended last time. Once again.
The basic premises for the plot seems somewhat farfetched, like it was fetched just for the sequel, from far... but it is how it is. A sequel. Not flawless. A bit of the same old same old and a whole lot of 'jolly good', but I did enjoy it. Once again.
Maybe better than last time too. It builds on some old stereotypes but it does get better, and in the end it definitely was a good movie. On many planes (or just the one) above the first. This time it definitely gets a...
