I thought I'd have tired of disaster movies by now, yet it seems there's always room for at least one more! The special effects in this one were awesome, but despite the spectacular views, it wasn't as emotionally awing as I'd have expected. There's plenty of drama, sure, but... it's just not spectacular. It doesn't bring tears to my eyes. Not even a crease of the brows.
On the emotional level, this movie was actually on par with this much lower budget movie with similar name that came out this same year. The special effects are worlds apart, but I feel about the same watching this one as that. Maybe the actors just aren't all fit for their roles. It goes to show that even with a budget you can make a decent film!
That said, this one does keep me glued to my seat, and though I get 'why did they do that!' moments in both movies, the filming process in this one is ethereal, whereas the special effects (or lack thereof) were a constant distraction in the other. You do get what you pay for, though I'm surprised the impressions I get aren't as worlds apart as they should be considering content costs. Good watch.
