Scary Movie (2000)

Script-wise, the first Scary Movie might actually have been the best of the bunch. It had plenty of over-the-edge humor - just like the rest of them, but it also had something that at least the latter two lack: a red thread. Continual plot development. The jokes are all over the place, and they're often pretty brutal or sexual (it's rated R!), but there's still a story. There's still a motive - no matter how much the guys deny it.

My general impressions of this movie went through a real rise this time I watched it. The cast is great, and they all put on a good show parodying mostly Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but a shitton of other movies too. You'll know the references when you see them. Or at least you'll see them and feel like you know them from somewhere, you know? Or maybe you'll be totally oblivious to them. I'm sure I missed a few too.

Some other notable movie references I did notice:

  • The Exorcist
  • The Shining
  • The Blair Witch Project
  • American Pie
  • The Matrix
  • The Usual Suspects
  • Halloween

It's crazy, crude, and sometimes pretty clever, that's Scary Movie. And is that Bad Meets Evil's Scary Movies tune playing in the credits?! Respect. Good watch.

Scary Movie (2000)

It's the parody of parodies when it comes to scary movies right here! It's a good one.

They're missing some key people in this cover though.

Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Matrix, maybe a little Carrie... those are the references I recognize most. But also plenty of general horror story cliches. The Scream references in particular are heavy heavy. So much scream. It's mainly a parody on that particular movie as a whole, with a lot of little gems mixed in.

I'm not a huge fan of the snot scene - not a fan of scenes that just unnecessarily gross you out in general - but of everything else: Hell yeah! And Eminem's Scary Movie in the credits?! They've got the right taste in music too! Heavy nostalgia there.

The characters are great, the transitions are great, Cindy's great, the sex jokes are all over - as you'd expect from a teenage horror movie - and Doofy in particular is such a great act. Props Dave Sheridan.

Also didn't realize they could have as much nudity as they had in a movie like this as they did here. Pushed some boundaries they did, back when they first got started. Not so much since.

The first one in this franchise is still such a solid one. Sometimes a little silly and overboard but... great watch. Almost as good as Scream itself. In some ways maybe even better...
