Bonehill

The merchant stands atop a hill of bones
And stands there, still
Wandering around the bonepile for a while
And wondering
Where all the bones came from and who them sent
To this hill
Where they repent
For past lives lived
And past errence
The present
The merchant looks down at his hand
An ample struggle against the sand
It dries him and his skin is cracked
He looks around, and then looks back
At all the bones
That he has passed
And then all the bones
He will
But he knows he will pass no more bones
If he now stands still
The world is round, if he walks a round
Around the world of his
Will he pass his tracks?
Will he track his tracks?
Will this pile of bones
Be here still?
He eyes the ground, he walks around
he walks from shore to shore
As merchants do, when they are true
And then he walks some more
And reaches then
The pile again
And realizes, since last it grew!
The bones of men
From now and then
All part of a seemless brew
He wonders if, when he grows stiff
This pile of bones, he will join
Or lie alone, under marked tombstone
Bestowed by the way of coin
He wonders when, the time will come
He wonders then, and wanders some
And then looks down at his hand once more
The sand is grim, the sand is sore
To him
