9000 Posts!

It's over 9000! Posts, that is.

I've apparently been going slow but steady, at an unintentional but surprisingly consistent rate of roughly five hundred posts per year. Same pace as before the last milestone, and the one before that.

We are almost up another quarter million words too, 270,000 words in comments, and 107,000 words on pages.

Come on y'all lets surge for ages! Onto the next thou...

Not The First Day Of The New Year

I was planning on posting a quick impromptu blog at the end of the first day of this new year, just saying it started alright, but that day flew.

The days since then I haven't really been in my right headspace I think.
I've been falling behind on dues again. Haven't been doing what I should be doing most.

I started getting out into the world again last week - took a long walk in the sun and snow one day and felt truly invigorated, head clear with fresh air, and yesterday I hung out with Buddy Bear for a couple movies, sweet potatoes and a search for local Northern Lights, but for the most part I've been stuck in social limbo, and household dues when the folks were still sick and sweaty and with no sense of smell...

Almost had a moment of panic for... a moment.

Felt like it was all falling apart.

But it wasn't really.

Deja vu to the early days of the pandemic when we were all precautiously holed up at home too, and I was working from home, and everybody was worried about everything and going a little crazy, stocking up on oat flour and coffee and other things, but at least it was spring and sun and everybody got their daily dose of fresh air and mindfulness then.

Not so much now.

Seems the whole world's sick at the time of writing, be that in the particular pandemic strain of flu or in some of the many other currently in circulation.

But maybe they're really all one and the same. Undiscovered; potentially mutated strains.

It's a good thing I can actually get out on these walks again though. I need to take more. I need to get to bed earlier. I need to get back on track with everything; manage time and mind a bit better than I currently do.

In site-related news all Flash submissions (most at least - I might still be missing a few uncategorized ones) now run with Ruffle, automatically, no settings required! Added more old unposted audio flashes while I was at it.

I updated the anime sidebar counts a while back too - as you need to do each new year, reduced the number of yearly archive links in the main sidebar along with the latest addition and updated the archives page instead - I'll get that looking a bit better later, plus added a bundle of new acronyms, went through a line of old posts, combined a few movie review duplicates aaand that's about it for now. Site-wise. Alright guys.

Was voted most helpful user on NG in the end-of-the-year NG BBS Awards for the third year in a row last year btw, results here. Award Flash here. Always nice. :)

I promised to post here a bit more often this year so I'm posting, though have not much else to say at the moment. Have started going through my queue of overdue reviews too. Plan to put up a bundle of those every weekend until I'm caught up... which might take the rest of the year. Excluding summer.

Gotta run through some overdue dues this week but I'll see you shortly... and btw if anyone knows if there's an easy fix to the AC display in a SAAB 9-3 from 1999 staying on even after you turn off the ignition and potentially draining the car battery entirely lemme know! I'm a little preoccupied about that at the moment.

Hope to make a few calls and figure things out this week.

Toodles. Cheers. It's not the first but... it's a day of the New Year.

Woo! It's not just around Christmas apparently. We passed the most recent thousandth in the middle of the year this time. Spring, 2021, probably? The count's up at 3,152 now and counting...

Not sure why I see the need to post about numbers like this. As if the social involvement on a blog is the best indication of accomplishment and reach, or the writing itself a quality measured by number more so than wisdom and/or witticism, but regardless of the reason I do have a thing for numbers! It seems the higher they are the worthier a cause for celebration, and in this dystopian world of ours we can use any cause we get can't we?

It is nice this place still garners a little activity too; maybe more so now than in a while now...

If you haven't ever left a comment here before why not leave one today!

I'll be back to respond in a couple months or so.

Lacking Drive... And Other Things

It's been a while! Meant to be posting a steady stream of movie reviews from the backlog the last week or two but time doth not wait for no one... and Pico Day's now closing in. Next weekend. Wonder if there's still time to manage something for it. Would've been nice!

Apart from work, and hoping to help out with a little something on ^ but not yet making the progress I'd hoped, a drive gave up on me last weekend. My project drive. A 3,5' 2TB WD HDD. The one I've occasionally been migrating more space-consuming items to as to free up space on my internal ones. Suddenly it's just... unrecognizable.

I wonder if I unplugged it too fast. I wonder if I jostled the chassis a little. It's an external case that can hot swap two internal drives with either RAID or JBOD formation - and one of those little rubber spots on the bottom of it has been missing for some time, so every time you hit the power switch on or off it tilts slightly. Been meaning to do something about that but figured it wasn't that big a deal. But what if that's the one thing that caused this?!

Drives are brave yet such brittle and easy breakable things.

Regardless of cause though, it's now so that every time I try to plug in said drive I get a 'this drive needs to be formatted' error message, and I keep getting dialog boxes on said error even if I don't click away the first one, so clearly it's more than just a formatting issue. It seems like it might be trying to start up, but can't find any data, and runs into some hardware failsafe in regard to for example a faulty read head that stops it, and then starts up again and runs into the same error, over and over...

I know you're not supposed to even try to activate a drive with a suspected hardware issue, but I tried some recovery/troubleshooting programs anyway in hopes they'd help. Alas they either don't even locate the drive, or they freeze up whilst searching. I tried running a few commands with chkdsk but ran into the same issue there. Either nothing happens or it gives a 'drive data is RAW' message.

So that's not encouraging.

Been researching companies that might be able to mend this drive, but all the reputable ones are hella expensive. Was on the verge of running with a cheaper one but fortunately did some reputation research first. I'm glad I didn't. Soondata, if you're wondering, seems to be a company you'd do best to either avoid or use at your own risk.

Too good to be true? If it seems so it may very well be.

There are some good ones though. I contacted one. They couldn't give a quote without being in actual possession of the drive. Transport's costly. I assume the job would be costly enough already - unless this really has nothing to do with hardware and I might best-case-scenario actually be able to fix this thing myself.

Hmm. What are files worth? What are these files worth? And more importantly: exactly what ARE these files?!

I haven't kept track enough. I have vague recollections of basic folder structure, but not contents. Fortunately I backed up a number of these directories on a whim just a few months back, and this past week I made an effort to backup those backups again in case they're currently the only copies, but I'm not sure exactly what else I had on the drive.

I've been listening to less podcasts than usual the past week though since one of those folders was my main podcast collection. I downloaded the full Joe Rogan Experience archive right before he went all Spotify exclusive (legal downloads - official site) and have been sifting through those a few at a time, moving over a few to the computer every now and then, slowly building up a massive list of private podcast ratings I've been meaning to publish here later...

At least that's still there. At least I know exactly which I've listened to. At least I do have a backup of most of the other directories, too.

There are three larger folders I know I haven't backed up, but don't know if they're important enough to merit a costly data rescue operation. No personal data there. Nothing all too memorable - but maybe useful.

There is a folder of personal video material I'm not sure if I added more material to post the last backup of said directory, and there is a folder for personal music projects I'm not sure I'd added anything to either. If I did I might have cleared out those files on the computer, and those files might be the only copies. There's possibly some other temporary stuff I don't recall at all. Not sure...

If I knew I'd know if a recovery's worth the price, and it's that uncertainty that bothers me.

If I had saved lists of all files I could've cross-referenced those, and made sure I had backups of what mattered, and could maybe fetch some of the non-personal files again elsewhere, but as it is it feels like some memorable or monumental bits of of history and/or notable creative endeavors might be trapped in this withering metal box, and the cost to recover those files would be low compared to the sentimental loss if not...

I guess I'll figure that out though huh.

In other news I updated the anime sidebar a while back, fixed a few broken links, removed the old bookmark script in the link sidebar - apparently there's no way to let a user bookmark your page via JavaScript these days! Not at all. Security concerns. It makes sense but... shame.

Also got a small pay raise (yay/praise) at work, have been exercising a bit more (had a grueling first-of-the-year-and-then-some jog last Saturday - sore muscles for days - finally recouped enough for a somewhat easier/shorter one today), and I may be taking a one day vacation next weekend, pandemic or no. Fingers crossed. It coincides with another day of esteemed creative endeavor alas (don't usually use that word so often), but I'm hyped about that regardless. Hopefully there's time for both.

Not much else to report. I saw a baby beaver this Friday. That was cool. Shared a spinach and tuna wrap with a hesitant squirrel too.

Next time I post something hopefully there's been a bit more progress made with that one project I'm working on apart from... well, work.

It's eating up my time! I'll see you though; be fine.

8000 Posts!

8000 Posts!

We just hit it! 8000 posts, and it's only been two years since the last milestone. Feels like I've been writing both less and slower, but apparently we're still keeping a steady pace of just about 500 posts per year, and I've managed an additional quarter million words since the last one too.

Also just hit 200,000 words in comments a while back, and 100,000 words on pages... real soon now. Haven't been editing those in a while now.

It's been a ride huh... here's to the next thousand, and the special puns that may follow then...

I'm ashamed I lost track of the comment count whenever I lost it, and these ceremonial comment numeral commemorating posts were lost to the times! They're back now though. They're here. Have no fear. We may be way past 2020 now (just like the numerals of this year), but post amounts won't die down, nor Congratulations be scarce. Go on show these all to your peers! Tell them to come over here! And celebrate with us and stuff, with a choire of coronary cheers!

Cause this is something. If there was a beat it'd be bumpin'.

Happy 999.
