The Dark Tower (2017)

The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black, determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

Let something epic commence! And epic it most definitely was. The tale of a dark tower that ties together the universes, and a sorcerer waging a war against it - who wants to let the demons that wait beyond the borders in and wreck havoc upon our world(s).

In his way - as well as also being a living tool that might let him accomplish his nefarious evil - is a little kid with impressive psychic power, and the last gunslinger in the world: Roland.

Matthew McConaughey plays the villain, Idris Elba the gunslinger, and Tom Taylor the kid (props to him), and their story is both imaginative and bad-ass! The final action sequence in particular. It all starts almost like a horror movie, but soon moves into fantasy and adventure, and the hybrid of worlds and genres and ideas make for a both refreshingly new and stereotype-type tale. I thought it'd be something like Maze Runner from the initial scene, but I'm happy it wasn't.

I love most of it, but some bits were a little predictable. The sorcerer loses his grasp all too easily. Everyone's introduced impeccably, but over time they lose a bit of their edge and authenticity, and in the end... it's just missing that perfection. That extra spark. That something special that could've kept it apart from all others.

If you like fantasy and action you'll definitely like this though. It jumps right in right away! Great action. Great atmosphere. Great watch.

This movie is very close to receiving a hot garbage rating. It feels like Disney trying their hand at making a dark fantasy film. The script is awkward, the movie is poorly directed and apart from the two leads the acting is terrible, especially the adolescent actor. Very weak, anticlimatic ending. The action was decent enough and idea good, but the fantasy world and concept of the dark tower (and what lies beyond) is ventured into enough.

We really got different vibes from this one! Maybe the awkward moments made for a somewhat bleak mood, which with a dystopia like this felt all the more suitable to me... hmm. But the ending: yeah. The ending was the low end.
