A Garfield movie eh? Ehh...
I was dubious. I've never been a huge fan of that arrogant; spoiled fat cat brat but... the trailer was OK. Figured the movie might be different.
Figured right!
It's theatric, dynamic, unexpectedly fun and visually impeccable right from the start, with a Garfield way more sympathetic than you'd expect him to be have you read the comics. And they bring in a father figure that initially comes across less sympathetic than he, which mayhaps makes you quickly shed said stereotypes, and shift your focus to what really matters, which is the story, and a relationship tale abrim with love and bonding in the most unexpected forms.
I like how they did this thing! They made a likable cat out of G Money right off the bat, with a script that's damn near poetic, brimming with creative intricacies and fun, with a colorful countryside like the one in Alan Wake, with Mission Impossible-inspired music for a moment, and with Samuel Jackson as the dad?!
There's Chris Pratt too, and Ving Rhames, and more! The VAs are all GREAT.
Jim Davis executive produced it too, they add in some cozy credits and real-life cat footage, some feelgood music... it's a feelgood movie for sure, but exciting, with at least one bird sacrifice I did nae expect. Some things are unexpected. Some things silly. All are fun.
It's a fun one y'all... and I don't think I say that just because I had low expectations for it initially. I think they might've wanted to give Garfield the benefit of the doubt too. And truly make this his movie. And it truly is.
Great watch.
rated 4/5: fo shizzle
Also: reminds me of the recent new Chicken Run movie a little bit too... similar theme with the escape thing. Similar mood and all too.
That was a great one too.
