Maze Runner 2 - Scorch Trials (2015)

Finally got around to watching the second segment of the Maze Runner trilogy (which I thought would be the final)!

Those who survived the last movie start off safe and sheltered, but they soon realize they are more captive than free, and together with his buddies (and another guy by the name of Aris) Thomas & Co escape, traversing a sandy wasteland to the mountains, where it seems a resistance may be hiding!

Before that, however, they run into bandits. And before that, zombies.

The scenery is beautiful, and chaotic. The twisted concrete structures and dunes amidst the wrecked cityscapes remind me of Rage (the game), and the further they go, the more familiar it all feels. The scenery is all very stylishly destroyed, though not always the most realistic. In one scene huge skyscrapers careen into a canyon - worn down and wrecked, and yet windows framed by scattered debris still cover a jutting wall as a floor of glass. It makes for one exciting and creative end to a segment of chase, and yet it makes little sense that glass would shatter so easily when it´s stayed unbroken this whole time.

The zombies... they're pretty scary! It reminds me of Silent Hill the way they do the close-ups. The chase scene where they're all wildly waving their flashlights and blue lights wave frenetically - bouncing off surfaces as they run, is another show of creative style. But though there are moments, and the movie is both exciting and pleasant to watch, much of the mystery from the last one just isn't there anymore.

We know the world, now. We know it's a wasteland. We know Wicked is the enemy, and at the end, we know what's going to happen next. The lack of mystery takes away much of the atmosphere that left me in awe after the first movie, but the story otherwise is not bad... even if it's also very reminiscent of concurrent trilogies such as The Hunger Games or Divergent. Whichever came first. Either way, I am looking forward to seeing how the characters traverse their trials in the final segment! TBC early 2017.

This was pretty damn interesting. And yet, nobody's spoken! Be the first!
