Time for a Mummy reboot too? Why not! This time the sexy Sofia Boutella gets the role - though she's mostly covered in bandages so you don't get to see much of that beauty outside the flashbacks. Tom Cruise plays the unexpected hero (unexpected in two ways) and Annabelle Wallis the other girl, and Russell Crowe the (also unexpected) Doctor Jeykll. Yes it's not just a name: it's a real mesh of franchises/universes/themes.
The way these myths all gather it feels a bit like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but the movie otherwise is more horror than action - and it's very modern. Cliche battle of the mind. Special effects. You know the drill.
The sand does blow mighty, and Tom Cruise never disappoints - even if he is how he always is, so you can expect a captivating movie nevertheless. Just not one that really breaks out of the crowd. It's Egypt, and that's nice, the plane crash was intense, and they do go full circle in a nice way, but it all comes off a bit shallow, predictable, overblown and gray. I'm divided as if to give it a three or four but.. there you go. Three you go.
It was a good movie, but it follows that common blockbuster formula; doesn't really manage the greatness it could have. Do like the cover art though! If only it was a comic.
rated 3/5: not bad
