The new thing just isn't the same thing as the old thing. The thing may look a lot more brutal in this one; a lot more disgustingly creepy, and the fiery flamethrower sessions are a real blaze, but the characters; the whole atmosphere of despair that permeated the last... just isn't as present in this one. Sure, the characters are desperate, but they're desperate in a different way. In a predictable way, maybe. A way that doesn't always convey authenticity, but reaction, in what feels like a renewed attempt to thrill and engross.
Then there are the special effects, which are (though cool) also pretty crappy. Sometimes they work, but sometimes they don't. They did a nice job with the Thing in particular, but with The Thing as a whole... it doesn't hold. They redeem themselves towards the end though. The suspense grows, and when it's all over we're taken back to where everything all started, hyped about the original, once again. The ending, that's really the best part. I shouldn't prepare you for a twist but... you'll surely enjoy it if you liked the original. It's not on par with that one, but it's not a bad movie either. Definately creepier than your average horrible horror flick. Good watch.
