Wing Chun (1994)

Seems suitable the most feminine of martial arts would get Michelle Yeoh as it's most classy charismatic cinematic representative, and a relational romance love triangle trouble for a plot, with a vicious mountain bandit gang, a widow and a traveler to spark things up and a relationship that's all about Kung-Fu...

The ending song's sung by a woman too. It's female empowerment a century back, with Donnie Yen in an untraditionally submissive role too. And done right! Michelle doesn't take advantage. It's just fun to see.

The fights are great, even if they are a little notably sped-up occasionally, even if the spear loses weight, even if they sometimes swirl unrealistically in the air (not too often though).

For the most part it's old martial art drama like it should be, airy and orchestrated, with a little more romantic a premise.

If you like movies like Iron Monkey or Tai Chi you'll like this one too.
