I've always liked this movie.
I liked it the first time I saw it, and I've liked it after, though I do understand why people critique it. It takes a drastic turn compared to the previous Blade movies. And it's different. It's filmed creatively.
It's not always as serious either - dark though it may be - with Ryan Reynolds now a part of the main cast. It's sexier, it's more mainstream; it amps up the ante way beyond what the earlier Blade movies did, too.
They used to keep it essential. They kept it dark and gritty and raw, and hardcore vampire-ridden to the core, but this... this ain't a bad difference.
I miss Kris, but I don't mind a little Jessica Biel in the mix, nor Parker Posey, or Ryan, or any of the other new faces I see.
The new cast feels credible, and diverse in a good way. Just look at how well Triple H fits in. You wouldn't think he would.
Dominic Purcell is just the perfect Dracula too. Without flaws. The scene where he draws blood in the Dracula store... *chefs kiss*
Though the 'Goochie Goo' scene's gotta be the best part of it.
All scenes are memorable though. Of all the Blade movies this is definitely the one I remember most, and both script and scenography feel intricate, even if certain elements vibe less with me than overs. Like little Zoey saying 'my friends are coming to kill you' to Drake, and smiling Death straight in the face, instead of at least showing a smidgen of terror.
If she braved it out it'd have been better. That moment just does not seem like her. And where's the get-together at the end? What plot element did she really provide in any of this? She's a loose end.
Other loose ends? There probably are a few of them, like how easily Blade runs free-reign in the city with his new clique, searching familiars even when the whole world is out to get him.
And the martial arts choreography for everyone but Wesley is not always top notch, but it holds. They film fights in a good way.
I really enjoyed this movie, even now, fourth or fifth time though it may be I see it.
And I wouldn't mind a new installment in the Blade saga yet. Wesley has most definitely still got it.
Maybe a few others in the crew do too.
rated 4.5/5: almost awesome
