Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child Of Fire (2023)

Zack Snyder!!! I did not know he was directing this one.

The Star Wars vibes are heavy here. I recognize plenty of the actors - some of the more well-known names in lesser positions than I expected them to be in. It's cool to see solider robots with free will - a potential few movies seem to explore. Even if there's just the one.

The action's overly slow-mo sometimes though. It looks cool, but I'm not overwhelmed by the choreography. It's like they tried to take the DC superhero style and fit it into an action movie, with regular characters - stylized though they may be, and all the time... I'm not sure it works so well. Those Transformer-like sound effects are so overused too. Can't they analyze actual electrics? Visualize how they'd sound in the future if they didn't always sound the same? Find something that maybe sounds more realistic?

I may seem overly critical but I did love this movie though. It's bad-ass. It's effectual and alien, and romantic too, even if it feels like it lives on both a borrowed plot and time... I really look forward to the next installment!

Reminds me of the age-old Samurai Seven story too. Outcasts gathering together to fight an overpowering enemy.

I love that theme.
